Cranberry Cannabis Bread Recipe (with Orange Glaze) · Weed Baking Guide

Ahh, cranberries. The tarter and significantly less tasty cousin of the blueberry. Look, if you were picking a date for prom, it’s clear which one you’d choose…

Why, the tart, of course! (Zing.)

But while we may not be lining up to pick and chow down on raw cranberries, they certainly make for some excellent sweet and savory flavor profiles. Variations of cranberry bread (like this cranberry cannabis bread recipe!) have been bouncing around the USA since the first colonizers rocked up and, *ahem*, BORROWED them from the Native Americans.

As for weed bread itself? Well, that history is murkier. But at some point, some contemporary genius of the post-legalization movement decided to put these two things together and created what might just be the BEST cranberry bread recipe ever…

You put them in a sugar-heavy dessert.

Cranberry Cannabis Bread Ingredients

  • Cranberry Bread
  • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 fresh cranberries (rinsed and dried)

  • 3/4 cups 3/4 granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 milk (room temperature)

  • 2 large 2 eggs (room temperature)

  • 1 large 1 orange (zest)

  • 6 tbsp 6 cannabutter

  • 1/2 tbsp 1/2 all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp 1 baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 salt

  • Orange Glaze
  • 1 cup 1 powdered sugar

  • 1 1/2 tbsp 1 1/2 freshly squeezed orange juice

  • 1 tsp 1 orange zest

Cranberry Cannabis Bread Recipe

  • Bake the Bread
  • Preheat the oven to 350˚F. (This recipe assumes you’ve already pre-made potent cannabutter and have some ready to go.)
  • Butter or grease a bread loaf baking pan (ideally 8″-9″). Dust the interior with flour and then tap out any excess flour.
  • Mix together the 1 1/2 cups of flour with the baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl and then set aside.
  • Combine the milk, orange zest (setting aside 1 tsp for later), and the 1/4 cup of orange juice in a separate bowl or cup. Set aside.
  • Cream together the cannabutter and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl for 2-3 minutes on a high speed. Once the consistency is mixed together (but not smooth), beat 2 large eggs into the mixture as well.
  • Add the flour mixture and other milk mixture to the butter mixture. For this, alternate between adding the flour and the milk in parts, mixing on a medium to low speed until each part is fully incorporated. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula to ensure all of the mixture is combined.
  • Toss the cranberries in the 1/2 tbsp of flour and then fold them into the batter until also fully incorporated.
  • Spread the batter into the pre-greased pan and bake for about 50 minutes. To check the bread’s progress, the top surface should be golden. You can stick a cake tester (or a similar pointy object) into the center until it comes out warm and clean.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before transferring the loaf to a cooling rack.
  • Make the Orange Glaze
  • Stir together the powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tbsp of orange juice, and the previously set aside orange zest in a new bowl.
  • Stir the glaze until smooth with a drizzly consistency. If you need to thicken the glaze, add more powdered sugar; more orange juice will thin it out instead.
  • Spread the glaze over the bread and serve it up when you’re sitting somewhere comfy and with a nice view. 😉

The Recipe in Action!

Notes

  • When it comes to gauging the dosage of your THC-infused edibles and bread, remember to tweak recipes to your preference. Cannabutter and canna-oil are fairly one-to-one in regards to swapabillity in recipes. So if you needed to soften the strength of this recipe (for example), you could swap 3 tablespoons of cannabutter for regular butter.
  • You can swap the fresh cranberries for unthawed frozen cranberries if necessary, but you may need to bake a little longer to compensate. Also, you can make this a cranberry nut bread recipe by adding chopped walnuts or pecans (about half a cup) along with the cranberries.
  • If you’re looking for a recipe for a helluva Christmas morning, try baking some gingersnap space cookies too. After all, it only comes once per year!

FAQs About Our Cranberry Cannabis Bread Recipe

Alrighty! Need some quick knowledge-bombs on baking with cannabis and/or cranberry bread?

As far as tart-meets-sweet recipes go, this one is a whole lot easier than something like a citrus and chocolate cannabis torte. That said, there is a science to making edibles as well as baking bread. The more you know, the better you’ll do!

Both fresh and dried cranberries are great for baking but with a slightly different result. Fresh cranberries provide a tart, juicy burst of flavor, ideal for a hard-hitting cranberry taste. Meanwhile, dried cranberries are sweeter and add a chewy texture. If you decide to follow this cranberry cannabis bread recipe with dried cranberries, use a bit less sugar as well (about two-thirds of a cup).

No, fresh cranberries can be added directly to your batter or dough as they will soften and burst during baking. If using dried cranberries, there’s still no need to cook them either. That said, I would recommend soaking them in liquid for a few minutes to plump them up first.

Baking marijuana bread requires cannabis-infused butter or oil (i.e., cannabutter or canna-oil). There are a lot of ways to go about making cannabis butter and oil. However, I really would recommend a weed infusion device as the easiest and fastest way to make cannabutter. It makes the whole process a snap as well as the clean-up process considerably less of a headache.

The effects of weed bread and edibles generally last between 4 to 8 hours with a lot of variation depending on the dosage and your tolerance levels. Most weed edibles typically kick in after 30 minutes to 2 hours but with a lot more intensity and sustain than smoking or vaping. The best advice is simply to start small, be smart, and stay safe.

The Origins of Cranberry Bread: From Medicine to Baked Delights

Cranberries: a native North American berry with a history as old as the continent’s endemic cultures themselves. Used as a staple by Native Americans for centuries, cranberries have featured as ingredients, a natural dye, and medicine.

An early American colonist stands on a pile of bodies wielding his freshly baked cranberry weed bread dessert in triumph.
The lesser-known Boston Cranberry Bread Party.

That said, the practice of using cranberries in baked dessert and bread recipes most likely began with the European colonizers. Once they observed the dynamic taste and vibrant hue cranberries brought to baking recipes, it was nearly impossible not to slam them in muffins, breads, and all sorts of treats!

The exact origins of the cranberry bread recipe itself are somewhat obscure. We do know it gained popularity in New England, where cranberries were abundantly harvested. Early colonizers combined the tart berries with other local ingredients, like cornmeal and molasses, resulting in the uniquely American version of fruit bread. Over time, the recipes evolved and introduced all sorts of ingredients like orange zest, nuts, and spices, resulting in all the wacky and wild variants we see today

These recipes for cranberry nut and orange bread became particularly popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its tangy-sweet taste and festive vibe sealed its place as a household favorite during Thanksgiving and Christmas events. This continues much the same today, although further evolutions of the recipe eventually resulted in the delightful cranberry weed bread you see before you today.

And Then We Added Weed!

Tis the season! Even if it’s not, it’s still ALWAYS the season for a hard-out 420 recipe.

Getting into baking with cannabis and, particularly, baking weed bread is great! Once you’ve got one loaf under your belt, the rest just fall like dominoes.

So whether it’s for an event, dessert, or brunch with your grandma (teehee), this cannabis cranberry bread recipe complete with orange glaze is bound to hit the spot. If you’re feeling truly wild, the tart and moist bread goes down a treat with some coconut weed pudding. Vanilla works well too.

And, of course, if you get bored of cranberries, banana blueberry bread makes for just as good a cannabis recipe. Maybe even better! But that’s just a matter of personal preference.

Me personally? Well, I just prefer them a little bit tarty.
